From 5 to 10 September the biggest producers and brands present their latest technological miracles – the Internationale Funkausstellung (International Radio Exhibition) turns Berlin for a few days into a mecca of consumer electronics. We’ve got the facts for you:
What is IFA?
The Internationale Funkausstellung, in short: IFA, has been held in Berlin since 1924 and presents the latest innovations in the field of entertainment and communication electronics. The very first TV devices, tape and video recorders, cellphones and smartphones were introduced here and the IFA is referred to as one of the most important trade fairs in the world. For a few years now the trade show has carried the nickname “Consumer Electronics Unlimited”.
What is there to see?
IFA 2014’s motto is: “This is IFAtainment”, and indeed the focus will be on innovations and new products in the field of consumer electronics again. Besides brand new smartphones, tablets and other handheld devices a special emphasis will be on the networked home: robot vacuum cleaners, intelligent refrigerators and washing machines, or a coffee machine that can percolate 18 different hot beverages – everything shall be controlled and configured via smartphone in the future. But of course there will also be impressive innovations in the field of TV sets, notebooks, navigation system and just whatever can be connected to the internet.
Who’s to visit the IFA?
IFA’s gates are open for anybody who’s interested in consumer electronics, wants to experience new technologies up close, or wants to be there when new products see the light of public for the first time. Roughly 1.200 exhibitors from 32 countries will face your questioning eyes, ears and hands. Buying tickets on the day is not cheap (17 €), but when you buy them online in advance it’s only 12 €. And if you buy two, you get the third one for free.
What else is there to see?
As every year the IFA is accompanied by a couple of events. Besides a soccer match of FC Union Berlin and the new Oktoberfest right underneath the Radio Tower Berlin the concerts in the cozy IFA Summer Garden are promised to be exciting highlights. This year’s line-up: Milow & Marit Larsen (4.9.), Max Herre (5.9.) and the rappers Sido, Materia, OK Kid and Thees (6.9.).
So let’s go?
