downunder

To get from Berlin to Australia you might want to dig your way through the Earth’s core – or you wait until next week and hop over to Kreuzberg’s Moviemento cinema: Down Under Berlin 2015 is Germany’s most important Australian and New Zealand film festival and will for the 5th time bring contemporary cinematic art from the southern hemisphere to Berlin from 16 to 20 September. Paradise on the screen – sounds ripper, right?

Talking of “paradise” – many say that the islands down under are exactly that. Backpackers and expats search for adventures and happiness here, they travel and conquer, settle down, or turn around again. Thus, this year’s theme is “Paradise Unknown” as the festival will explore in about 40 films stories about the journey of life, new beginnings, and surviving the everyday. Audiences will see different ideas of paradise as they unfold on the big screen, and discover just how near, or how far, paradise can be in Australian and New Zealand cinema.

For Down Under Berlin is turning five this year, it will also last five days instead of the usual three, and we can look forward to blockbusters, documentaries, independent productions, and artsy stuff. Directors and filmmakers will stop by for a talk or discussion and there will be heaps of opportunities for drinking, celebrating, and hanging out together in the festival lounge and elsewhere. Just like there are hundreds of thousands of Germans living in Australia and New Zealand, many Aussies and Kiwis have settled in Berlin during the last few years. They shape the cultural scene of the capital in art, music, film, and many other ways, so Down Under Berlin 2015 is an excellent way of dipping your toe into this (sub)culture.

From Industriepalast Hostel it is only a ten minute ride on U12 and U8 to Moviemento, and we are already looking forward to all the stories and impressions you will bring home to the hostel bar from the pictures.
