The days are getting shorter, the nights colder and chocolate Santa Claus reigns the supermarkets. It’s the most wonderful time of the year again, and what better way to get in the right mood than enjoying a hot cup of mulled wine on a romantic Christmas market? Here is where to find Berlin’s most beautiful Christmas markets 2014:
Wild and Loud
You prefer to spend Advent with mulled wine, ferris wheel and AprèsSki? Go for Alexanderplatz, where Berlin’s biggest Christmas party attracts myriads of people with food corners, fun rides and, of course, Glühwein booths each year. Furthermore, there’s an ice-skating rink and just a whole lot of action everywhere. The jamboree reaches from Alexanderplatz to Jannowitzbrücke – Christmas for party people!
If you prefer it a little more romantic, just walk to Schlossplatz right next to the Berlin Dom, where the cute Opernpalais Christmas Market takes place.
One of the most beautiful Christmas markets happens far in the west of the city: in the baroque setting of Charlottenburg Palace you find a market full of atmosphere and nostalgia. Roughly 250 merchants from all over the world offer jewelery, Christmas gifts and a variety of delicacies. For the little ones there are historic fun rides and for everyone an adoring Christmas illumination.
The endearing “Weihnachtszauber” at Gendarmenmarkt in Mitte belongs to the city’s most famous markets, too. Here it is all about art and handicrafts, furthermore there are all sorts of live performances by choirs, dancers, acrobats and even fire artists. Also you’ll probably find the largest variety of tasty and warming winter snacks here.
Creative and Eco-Friendly
Far off the consumption-frenzy of plastic toys an eco-friendly Christmas market takes place on the beautiful Kollwitzplatz in Prenzlauer Berg during every Sunday in Advent. For ten years now the tiny market has proven that enjoying Christmas time is double the fun when sustainable and fair. Roughly 60 merchants bring regional organic products to an idyllic setting. Advent fun with a clear conscious.
Quite modern and extraordinary is the TrendMafia Designer Christmas Market in the backyards at Hackesche Höfe: Artists and designers from Berlin present all sorts of artworks, jewelery and fashion. Styles range from punk to kitsch and there are no mass products here.
Here in the Hood
Friedrichshain has a reputation as one of the city’s most creative boroughs, no wonder there is a special venue waiting for you right here: Friedrichshain Christmas Market at Samariterkirche has almost exclusively merchants from the hood, and what they offer is handmade, creative and has a fair price. Also you’ll have plenty of opportunity to meet locals, chat, or just hang out. Advent in the trendy hood!
At Industriepalast Hostel you not only find a warm and comfy bed and a tasty hot chocolate, you are close to all Christmas markets, too. So enjoy the Advent in wintery Berlin and explore the markets of the town. You find an overview of all Christmas markets mentioned above with directions at the end of the article.
Have a splendid Christmas time,
