Hard to believe, but technically summer in the German capital starts only now. Unlimited sunshine and tropical temperatures have already given us a good idea of what this summer in Berlin will be like: hot! Street festivals and open-air parties, cultural events, fashion week, and consumer electronics trade show make every summer in Berlin unforgettable. Industriepalast Hostel is your base for an amazing summer in Berlin, and we’re happy to present to you: the most amazing events in Berlin this summer:
Ibiza on the Spree river
When paying the German capital a visit during summer you might quickly start wondering: Does anybody actually work here? The moment the sun comes out and takes its position high in the sky, techno parties, street festivals, and open-air events pop up at every corner. Berlin is a hotspot for the global lgbtiq* movement and in summer you can really feel that: Lesbian-Gay Stadtfest (July 21 – 22, 2018) on Nollendorfplatz in Schöneberg and the annual Christopher Street Day parade on July 28, 2018 are proof enough. The world’s longest beer garden will open its gates again from August 3 – 8, 2018 on Karl-Marx-Allee for Berlin International Beer Festival. Enjoy the most exquisite brews there are in the world! Talking about exquisite: Vegan Summer Fest on Alexanderplatz (August 24 – 26, 2018) offers recommendations, ideas, and snacks for everybody embracing the cruelty-free lifestyle. Legendary Loveparade is long gone, but the idea can’t be killed: Zug der Liebe on August 25, 2018, is a techno manifestation and party parade – something you should have experienced at least once in your life! And the “closing” of the summer festival season is Berlin’s biggest mainstream music festival: Lollapalooza Berlin (September 8 – 9, 2018).
More than just 90 minutes
Sure, the biggest topic right now is obviously the FIFA Football World Cup 2018 in Russia. The world’s biggest public viewing event takes place at a most impressive location right in the city centre of Berlin: The Fan Fest between Siegessäule and Brandenburg Gate is almost two kilometers long. From June 14 to July 15, 2018, all games of the German team will be broadcasted, as well as all matches following the group stage – all the way to the big final on July 15. Admission is free, but there are very strict rules in place as to what you can carry on you during the event.
If you want to experience a world-class sports event at first hand, make sure you’re in town for Berlin Marathon (September 15 – 16, 2018). With over 30,000 runners it is not only one of the biggest in the world, it was here that most of the latest world record times where set. Many call it the fastest marathon in the world! And it sure is an amazing event gripping the entire city.
High temperatures, high culture
If you think summer is a synonyme for “summer break” you’re wrong! Because when theatres and concert halls call it a season, that’s when the festival season begins. And what a festival season it is, here in Berlin! The kick-off is Classic Open Air in the cozy ambience of historic Gendarmenmarkt (July 5 – 9, 2018). Komische Oper, one of Berlin’s three opera houses, recalls all premieres of the last season during Komische Oper Festival (July 10 – 15, 2018). Have a good laugh and enjoy some of the best street theatre performances during the many events of Berlin lacht! between July 26 and August 12, 2018. What used to be the “Berlin Music Week” now goes by the name of Pop-Kultur Berlin. Lots of concerts, readings, talks and jams in the old brewery of Prenzlauer Berg from August 15 to 17, 2018. For contemporary dance and dance theatre check out the program of Tanz im August (August 10 – September 2, 2018). After this, Musikfest Berlin (August 31 – September 18, 2018) is one of the most influential festivals in orchestra music. More than just your casual summer holiday reads are the works presented during International Literature Festival from September 5 to 15. And if you’re into art: Berlin Art Week is your highlight with more than 100 galleries participating this year (September 26 – 30, 2018).
Consumers and electronics
What is missing still? Trade shows! The fall edition of Berlin Fashion Week takes place in summer (July 3 – 7, 2018, to be precise). And as usual it comes with heaps of associated events that put a specific focus on sustainability, local street styles, and many other things. The biggest trade show highlight is annual IFA Consumer Electronics (August 31 – September 5, 2018), the world’s leading fair for consumer electronics. And it’s not for professional visitors only – on the public days you’re welcome to see all the newest innovations for yourself. Hungry for more? Berlin Food Week (September 17 – 23, 2018) is the foodie festival the German capital deserves. Historic Jandorf Convenience Store will be turned into a huge platform for exchange between professional and amateur chefs, while you can eat your way through numerous other locations in Berlin. Tasty way to end the summer!
