What to expect:
London’s original Madame Tussauds has been a major attraction for almost two centuries already. For good reasons: Most of us will never in our lives get a chance to meet TV celebrities, movie actors, legendary athletes, or important historical characters in real life. Yet, there is this wax museum: It is almost uncanny how realistic these elaborately made wax copies of famous people look – and how close you can get to them. Since 2007 there has been a branch museum here in Berlin, at a very historic location right next to Brandenburg Gate. And just like the original, the museum here presents an enthralling combination of world-famous celebrities, local references, and interactive fun. There is so much to be discovered in numerous different theme areas: Like the Sports Zone, where you can determine your weight class with Muhammad Ali, meet goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, or share the top step of the winners’ rostrum with F1 champion Sebastian Vettel. World Politics lets you address the nation together with chancellor Angela Merkel or listen “live” to John F. Kennedy’s famous “Ick bin ein Berliner” speech. Feel like a celebrity yet? Good, goes you’re entering the A-List Zone, where Angelina Jolie, George Clooney, and Robert Pattinson wait for you to take a selfie with them. The Music Zone has all your favorite rock stars, like Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber or the late Michael Jackson – not to mention Berlin’s all-time favorite David Bowie, of course. One of the most popular areas currently is the STAR WARS Zone, which has all major characters from the franchise. There are many local German celebrities, too, which you might not have heard of yet (like YouTube sensation Bibi, whose hologram let’s you shoot an actual beauty tutorial with her on site). Others you might know all the better: How about a multi-step runway tutorial by (wax) Heidi Klum? One of the most fascinating things though might be the chance to meet long-gone historical figures, like Anne Frank (writing her diary of course), Karl Marx, Ludwig van Beethoven, or Albert Einstein.
To take pictures is not only permitted, but welcomed. You can even hug, touch, and pose with the waxworks.
Plan your visit:
Madame Tussauds Berlin is located right in the city centre, on Unter den Linden Boulevard, not far from Brandenburg Gate. The easiest and fastest way to get there is by metro to Friedrichstraße station, from where it’s just a short walk to the attraction. Admission fee is 23.50€ on site, but there’s an option to purchase a cheaper online ticket in advance at only 16€. On some days, you might end up having to wait in line for an hour or longer, so it might be worth it getting an online VIP ticket with priority access (20€). In general, Madame Tussauds Berlin has full accessibility and suitable for all ages. Minors under the age of 16 are to bring an accompanying adult though. Further information and a ticket shop can be found on the official website.
Perfect for groups:
If you’re a larger or smaller group, Madame Tussauds Berlin makes for a perfect attraction! For groups of ten or more, there’s discounted entry including VIP access. There are also great offers for school groups: Not only is admission a lot cheaper, there are also guided tours for students available every day, featuring a lot of interesting information about different characters from more than two centuries of history. School groups should book well in advance though (minimum one week).
