Blue turns black
In 2008 one of Germany’s largest multipurpose halls was opened right on Spree River, next to the famous East Side Gallery and not far from the nightlife hub Warschauer Straße. It can take up to 17.000 people and is suitable for sports, concerts, and other cultural events. Originally named O2 World Berlin the automaker Mercedes Benz bought the naming rights for the next 20 years in 2015. Subsequently, the blue exterior and interior of the hall were repainted black, the video cube inside the hall has grown significantly, and the new name, accompanied by a silver star, is conspicuous on the outside.
Ice bears and albatrosses
Sure, there is an endless coming and going of famous singers and bands, but to many locals the Arena is the setting for big dramas every week. The reason: two sports teams who call the hall their home – ice hockey club Eisbären Berlin and basketball club Alba Berlin. Both teams play in the first national league and thousands of fans follow every match live. Mercedes Benz Arena is one of the best indoor sports venues in the world, that is why parts of the 2015 European Basketball Championship – in short: EuroBaskets – were being held here. The regular games of the Eisbären and the Albatrosse are always worth a visit; in addition to that Europe’s best basketball teams will be in town for the Euroleague Final Four in May 2016.
But the Arena does not only host big sport events, of course. For concerts and shows Mercedes Benz Arena is the city’s top address. The calendar for 2016 is already full of thrilling events – want some names?
